The curbside firey breathing steel alligator stole the show. There were a few memorable pieces in the galleries: great collages by Jennifer someone - very trendy NYC. Also a simple graffiti spray paint forward facing elephant painting, stood out in another unmemorable gallery. In most of the galleries, I felt like I was entering someone's home. Unpainted floor galleries lead to back studio/frame shops, leading to backyard porch, leading to garages with more photographs on display. Tennyson is no Santa Fe, but there's a nice community neighborhood feel to the area. I'd definitely go again.

Thank you Target !

In celebration of the DNC in Denver, Target sponsored a free day at the Denver Art Museum yesterday. The free day (as they're usually closed Mondays) was a great excuse to see the new installation of the Modern Art galleries. I applaud the modern art curator for working with Sandy Skoglund. The "Fox Games" installation looked incredible in the space. Above is a photo of a similar installation but the colors are reversed at DAM. Bright red painted walls (Target Red?) and gray foxes. Even though 5 people were stepping on the red painted floor, when I visited, (when the installation was clearly marked: stay on the path) it was the highlight of the room. The installation reminded me that Rule Gallery had some of her early early photographs up, like "Peas on a Plate" from 1978 (seen below).

Exiting DAM with a free black Target tote bag that hooks over your grocery cart, I noticed marketing was very careful not to have any donkey paraphernalia on the bag: only 2 buttons, and one that says National Convention. Although the museum looks like two galleries, capping both ends of a long hallway, it houses a wonderful professional display of artist and historical quilts. Up until, August 2nd are two shows: "Sisters in Cloth" & "Pre-1840 Bed Coverings".

"Sisters in Cloth" is a sampling of contemporary quilts created by female African -American Textile artists. Some quilts feature traditional patterns, but most are free form representational portraits or symbols.

"Pre-1840 Bed Coverings" (exciting as the name sounds) is a nice balance to the contemporary collection in the front gallery. The bed coverings are new quilts reproduced from pictures and samples of Pre-1840 quilts. If you're interested in patterns and geometry, then this is the gallery to study. The galleries provide a good teaching tool for tessellations and fiber art, but also just enjoyable for what they display. Additionally the staff is very helpful, friendly, and of course all quilters themselves.

Art & Dance

Hidden amongst the floors and floors of books are two terrific galleries at the Denver Public Library. Currently showing: local art on the 5th floor, Dance on the top floor.

Press "5" in the elevator to see the 80th Annual Members Show of the Colorado Artists Guild, up until July 31st. Unfortunately the show is obviously grouped by subject matter: portraits, landscapes, flowers, etc. The landscapes shine the brightest, which I attribute to Part 1- good artists, Part 2- inspiring Colorado scenery. It's easy to pick out the works that were painted from photographs, but don't despair, there are some really well crafted paintings in this exhibit.

On the top floor, "Dance Treasures" is on loan from the Smithsonian. a traveling exhibit, with multitudes of printed panels, but don't fret, the whole show isn't entirely reproductions. Head to the center of the exhibit where beaded costumes from the Denver Ballet save the show. Although the dancers' costumes are smushed in thin cases like dead bugs, it's hard not to ooh and aah over beaded and jeweled taffeta. Take your little girly girl up to the exhibit so she can almost touch the sugary pink icing tutus. On your way back out, glance at some of the photo repros, and pay homage to Gregory Hines, one of my favorite dancers.

Urban Nature

Saturday afternoon I drove over to the Denver Botanic Gardens for the first time. It was a such a nice afternoon, sun shining, not too hot. And 4 weddings were taking place throughout the gardens. Not only are the grounds vast, but truly educational. I'm hoping my $10.50 will go towards some improvements in the "children's secret path" as it seemed a little worse for the ware.

The Botanic Gardens are a must see destination this summer. Everything is in bloom, and looking gorgeous. I got a nice little education on succulents, and dry land mesa species.

"Urban Nature" is up until Nov. 30th. I had seen many banners throughout downtown, advertising the show. But I admit I wasn't sure what to expect, as the advertisements are deceiving. Throughout the garden are large panels on posts that were painted by National and local street artists. The peacock feather painting on the right side at the main entrance is to drool for. I want it on my brick wall in my future home. I applaud the leadership at the Gardens by creating an unexpected temporary home for graffiti artists paintings. Local artist, Amanda Marie, pictured above, has some fantastic collage paint work in the gardens.

Don't believe the city banners; it's not just more plants, it's a whole garden of art mixed with manicured nature.

Gee's Bend

Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt at the Denver Art Museum, surprises and delights.

This last Saturday, some of the quilters came to Denver all the way from Alabama for a day of gallery sitting and sample sewing.

The show is a wonderful survey of quilts from Gee's Bend, Alabama, one of the poorest areas in the country. The quilters have become somewhat celebrities in the last couple years, with their work featured on US postage stamps, and sewing with Martha Stewart and other celebrities. The exhibit is a wonderful survey, from the faded blue work shirts in the beginning, to the more modern experimental quilts at the end. Corduroy is big in this show, showcasing the 70's Sears avocado green color. There are some nice surprises, like the double white cross of basketball jerseys, as shown above. I was also surprised to find a beautiful aqua colored fabric incorporated into some of the quilts in the back room. Not one quilt is perfectly square, high-lighting the handmade quality of the work. The exhibit inspired me to go home and rip up old stained t-shirts and search through C's closet for thread worn clothes (not a difficult task). The show is up until July 6th, and shouldn't be missed.

Travels

As the design of Milton Glaser succinctly states, I really do love New York City. Memorial Day weekend provided a great get-away and indulgent art viewing trip. Unfortunately, the Whitney Biennial was incredibly disappointing, but the Met's Superhero show redeemed the trip for us.

The Whitney Biennial, like most critics (note Times review here) and friends had relayed was incredibly disappointing: small sample of artists, not a lot of new thought nor technique, and too much poor quality of craft.

Jedediah Caesar, was the only artist worth mentioning for his large styrene block of dripped resins, and the cube of resin trash, sliced and displayed like shiny marble counter tops in renovated kitchens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Superhero show at the Met, although it also was incredibly too short and small of a show. Linda Carter's costume, with now faded to purple costume, was incredible, and hard not to get incredibly nostalgic.
The Met did a nice job placing the super hero TV/movie costume center stage, with dramatic cityscape backgrounds. Then fashion designer inspired or related pieces surrounded the central figure. Besides Wonder Woman's, most of the costumes were quite modern and contemporary, including Robert Downey, Jr.'s, Iron Man costume. (thank you).

As much as I don't like Jeff Koons, his work is not to be missed on the rooftop of the Met. His balloon dog, and large heart's magnificently shiny surface reflected the NY cityscape and sunlight, much to photographers' and tourists' delight.

Lincoln on Lincoln

Out until this Sunday, a large trailer / exhibit all about Abraham Lincoln is on the Lincoln St. side of the Colorado History Museum. ( I can't make that up). It's not heavy on the artifacts, I wonder if for insurance reasons. But you will see Mary Todd's china, and some early campaign ribbons. There's plenty of video screens and movies, and an impressive film/hologram to hold your interest. Plenty of facsimiles to read as well. The spacious exhibit is well done for a traveling exhibit that can basically set up camp anywhere. After a few seconds you forget you're inside a trailer on the street.

Xi @ RULE

A sea of floating heads by Zhang Xi, surround the gallery at Rule this month. The three dimensional aspect of the faces, is one of the most interesting parts of the show. (however it never reproduces well in 2-D images, as seen left)

Visual Summary: Large canvases in earth tones with images of heads, dipped in mud with only areas around the eyes revealing original skin tone. Masks and masks.

Wow Factor: Beautiful doesn't come to mind, but creepy and disturbing does. Faces pop out of the canvas, almost playful.

It's hard not to think of the upcoming Olympics in front of this show. The disembodied heads are constant reminders of China's human rights policies and their treatment of Tibet. The show is worth checking out, for its disturbing qualities and I guarantee you, you won't find another show like this in Denver right now.

Leggo my Legos

A funny little installation of a Lego Western town is up at the Colorado History Museum, til the end of the month. I expected a small historic home turned into a museum. It was really hard not to laugh, and I applaud the volunteers present that Saturday, for their enthusiasm and knowledge.

A startling glass closet/phone booth of 3 huge teddy bears is awaiting your discovery on the 2nd floor. Most disturbing was a case of green army soldiers - half of them fallen down (intentionally?), with a model plane, tied with thick white yarn, and scotch taped to the top of the much needed to be replaced acrylic box. It was apparent the museum has no budget, and part of me wants to commend them for the job they've done, but it also made me want to cry. Large colorful print fabrics draped across the toilets to show they're not in use?

You can even rent the facility for birthday parties. If you really like doll houses, this is the place to visit, however, old metal toys and teddy bears, you won't find much of. There was an overwhelming amount of Asian dolls for some reason. I admit, I did freak out when I saw an old plastic horse that I hadn't seen since the Christmas I received it, but it's hair wasn't even well groomed.......

Words that came to mind meandering around the house: "sad, weird". The sun room/play room has 3 or 4 rows of window stickers depicting fameous Black Americans. Needless to say I was surprised to be greeted by an image of Billy Cosby when I entered the room. Are they forgotten images from February?

Indeed a strange place.

Free Doors

"Doors Open Denver" is this weekend. It was C's first time, and I was happy he appreciated the building, and didn't think it overwhelmed the artwork. I must commend the education department at DAM. The kid's activities are spot on. The laser bubble popping could keep any adult entertained for hours. "Kids look here"- nook and crannies are tucked away throughout the museum with fun creative activities - it's fantastic.

British artist, Richard Patterson's work, really intrigued me this weekend. Contemporary photo-realism at it's best. DAM has two striking large works by him in the new wing. "Minotaur With Brushstrokes" (pictured above) an oil on canvas, is so well executed. It truly looks like a high resolution print. I love the creepy quality of the action minotaur figure. The brushstrokes bring you back to reality that it's a painting, not a print. The brushstrokes, although they could seem quite obtrusive, our a welcome interruption, veiling the scene.

Christoph Heinrich, the curator of Contemporary and Modern Art, has gotten quite a bit of local press, for his exhibition plans and collecting at DAM. The work on current view is excellent, and well worth seeking out.

Penny for MCA

I was happy to see the Museum of Contemporary Art , quite crowded at opening time - 10 am on a Saturday. (The Transformer Mirror ball piece is still up on the 2nd floor if you haven't seen it already.) Thank goodness the Bob Marley video installation from the basement is gone. Next to it, and throughout the museum are architectural models by David Adjaye, the architect of the Contemporary museum. He is one of the hot architects to follow right now. Architectural models, are difficult to draw a crowd, but they're well displayed, along with samples of building materials that the public can physically touch.

Jeff Starr, of RULE Gallery, has a solo area up on the 2nd floor. You might remember this tree trunk painting with axe and money bag. There's some nice home paintings included in the area, and an installation I had little patience for.

Following Starr's work is a room of intrigue, and not for the faint of heart, by Jasper de Beiger. His models, and prints are a mix of: war victims, wrecks, Judgement Day meets Gears of War video game. The portrait photo collages, from the series, "le sacre du printemps" depict men that have been to hell and back. Take note of the actual 8 inch models that he used for the photographs. A nice courtesy to have a hint of the process.

As always there is plenty to look at MCA, and if you tire of the art, have lunch on the roof top balcony.

RULE amazes again

RULE gallery continues to impress me. A beautiful photo show, part of photography month, is up until April 5th, so catch it today!

"A Simple Truth", features approximately 4 pieces each by 5 women photographers. Most of the photos are details of things, close-ups of everyday objects - thus being the simple truth. Nothing is complicated or harsh on the eyes.

Rebecca Dolan's dramatic cloudscapes, incorporate much more black sky then you would imagine. Anna Newell's photos of texture and patterns, are calming. If you've been down to the Contemporary, you'll recognize the black and white floral building shot. Newell's and Katie Taft's work looks fabulous in big white frames with white mats. It's really the only way I want to look at photography now. Very clean. I just loved Katie Taft's work, pictured above, "Baked in a Pie". Reminds me of the children's nursery rhyme - "Sing a song of six-pence,...... 4 & 20 blackbirds baked in pie", creepy featureless birds except for a beak. Rachel Hawthorn's work was somewhat milder next to the others, details of windows, reminiscent of film stills. And finally Ellen Yeiser's work, bold and interesting details of nature.

The show was well curated, and it's rare that my thoughts go to the curator, but they did an excellent job, picking work with similar themes. Well done again RULE.

Also in the back, check out the piezographic pigment print on white paper titled, "Rich 1978", by Bryan Boettiger. Simple and interesting, nostalgia provoked. Paola Ochoa's work is much better in person than in reproduced image. Really wet media used to make collages of wings and grass.

Always something fantastic at RULE.

Travels

I was going to limit myself to reviews of Denver galleries and museums, but when you see great things, you want to share them.

I was on such a high walking around the Broad Contemporary Art Museum next to LACMA in Los Angeles. N and I were there for the guards to open the door at 11am on Saturday. This is a night owl museum as general hours are Noon to 8pm. Truly spectacular. Do a Guggenheim, and start on the third floor and work your way down. Barbara Krueger did a great job in the elevator in the center of the building.

Visual Summary: Spacious galleries with contemporary art (contemporary meaning Jeff Koons & Barbara Krueger)

Wow Factor: There are 8 works by one artist grouped together! You can actually study the artist, not just one piece or 2 but 8 - i love it!!!!!

I liked what David Byrne had to say about the opening, and describing the museum. I'm assuming the "C' is Cindy Sherman, and the room of her work is spectacular -photos hung McMansion salon style.

I really don't like Jeff Koons, and I"m not interested in his whole commodity, repro as art, or usage of Porn actors in his work, but I have to admit I really liked his piece outside. (similar example above -flowers) And it's hard not to like a big balloon dog.

Chris Burden's work ain't to shabby either. Nice intro on Plaza.

Finally my favorite area of BCAM, is Damien Hirst's 2 rooms. His butterfly, stained glass work is amazing. It's sick and twisted, and just plain unbelievable. (and it's free!!!)

Currently on view is "Masterpieces of Colorado". I rarely say this, but every single painting is truly beautiful. It's a great collection of Colorado landscapes, that has been touring for quite some time. It originated at Fort Lewis College in Durango last February, and its final stop is the Library until May 23rd.

Joe Arnold's work (example above) was probably my favorite of the contemporary artists. His canvases are sculptural - curved toward you, as to echo the view of the mountains.

The whole show is truly dazzling, and beautiful. Also the view from the 7th floor, of City Park is not to be missed. Bring a friend, check out a book, and enjoy the show.

Kirkland Musem

I was delightfully surprised by the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Arts. Anyone starting a registry for a house or wedding needs to see this place, as they have a fabulous collection of housewares, and china. It's a great study of design, and will help anyone appreciate where the current Crate & Barrel forms come from. It will also make the options at Bed Bath and Beyond seem boring and limited.

Apparently the current paintings on display are a collection of Colorado artists. Well all the furniture and ceramics outshine the paintings monstrously.

When I entered the museum, I thought I was in the gift shop, until I realized I was looking at the actual displays. Every room is crammed pack with Decorative furniture, and cases and cases of wares. The paper printed Warhol soup dress in the basement is not to be missed. If you are lucky enough to have one hiding flat in your basement, that was once distributed for less than $2, well dig it out, b/c it is now worth estimated $4000.

I also enjoyed the various espresso cups, and fiesta ware. I could do without Kirkland's dot paintings, but I see their importance in Art History.

Just a warning, don't plan on sitting down anywhere, as all the chairs are off limits, unless you have supersonic vision, and can read the fine print on the clear labels on a select few chairs that read, "for visitor seating" but don't risk it, otherwise you might sit on an old unstable Frank Lloyd Wright chair, and I don't want to think about the consequences.

More of Photography Month @ AI

If you're not bothered by photography hung crooked on linen wrapped walls, than this is the place to visit. Also, did I mention, there's a moment where you feel like you just landed in Brazil, with an American Passport? To enter into Art Institute now, they take your photo, name, and print it out on a sticker I.D. badge to wear. And YES they are open to the public. So how long am I in their computer system?

Warnings: If you are offended by nudity don't see this show. If you like Rhubarb and will no longer make rhubarb pies because of the previously mentioned element in the show, again, don't see this show.

As I feel about most exhibits, you are bound to find one thing you will like, thus worth adventuring out to the gallery. "Elements" is at the Art Institute of Colorado on Lincoln St. in the John Jellico Gallery, and is up until March 31st.

Elements is a collection of Contemporary photography curated by photographer Angela Faris Belt. She has a good opening piece at the entrance of the show, a flock of birds printed on paper, almost like a lithograph.

I was a little confused as to whether the show is for the purpose of contemporary photography, or to promote her new book. Regardless, there are a few strong pieces.

Suzanne Szucs's photographs are in a large Polaroid format but they're actually ink jet prints. I really didn't need to see her breasts for her self portrait. Far away the 12 photos work well together, but up close it lost my respect, I didn't want to be intimate with the photos, or her, perhaps her point. Also see above mentioned Rhubarb warning.

On the cleaner sweeter, sugary side, Alexis Abrams black and white photo of "Flower Girl at a Bridal Fashion Show", was elegantly beautiful yet still voyeuristic and creepy.

Last highlight: Alexandre Orion, "from Metabiotics Series", great devil chasing a child through shadow. mmmm nice shot and manipulation of image.

The show is a little disjointed, but the strong work shines through very well.

Square Dots & Core

Sharon McEachern's paintings at Core new art space are up until this Easter Sunday. The paintings are fun and whimsical. "Moo" a pink cow, with a big red tongue is the most interesting and entertaining. All acrylic, they are made up of small squares of colors, reminiscent of Aboriginal dot paintings. The craftsmanship is not pristine, but it is easy to appreciate her use of color and technique.

Half-Truths

"Half-Truths" isn't a bad little show by Patricia Miller. It's up at Spark Gallery on Santa Fe, until this Sunday, March 23rd (closing coffee Noon- 5pm). Miller's work reminds me of a lot of Freshmen, Sophomore Art School work, where students experiment with collage and layering of paper and text. "Half-Truths" is a good blend of sculpture, assemblage, and collage. The tea stained pallatte is common but always contemporary. The collages, are something you might see for Anthropologie's Spring home collection, which means although commercial, they have a mass appeal to the market interested in handmade well crafted items. It's obvious her work is influenced by Joseph Cornell, which isn't a bad thing. Perhaps a feminine interpretation of Cornell. I found it interesting she's worked in a book store for many years. It seems apparent in the repeated text throughout her work. Her work is also reminiscent of the series "Griffin & Sabine" by Nick Bantock. Worth taking a stroll through the gallery.

Photography Month

Apparantly it's Photography Month in Denver, so in honor of capturing light, I'll mention a photography show I enjoyed recently on First Friday this month. Anthony Camera's show is up at Fresh Art Studios, behind Core Gallery on Santa Fe. It's a maze back there, but worth navigated to find the good stuff. You can tell right away Camera has a sense of humor. He prints bright colors, high contrast (in a good way) and humorous expressions. His work is commercial, yet his Raphaelesque female portraits, resemble some great contemporary photographers such as Jeurgen Teller. There's also some interesting wedding shots, which is hard to do creatively when we're talking wedding photography without looking cheesy. Have a look, it's worth the time.

Jimenez Hype

It seems all of Denver has been grumbling about, Luis Jimenez's 32 foot high sculpture, Mustang. I saw it recently, while picking someone up at DIA. I wasn't terribly impressed, but I thought it was a lot more interesting and easy on the eye than Jimenez's other shiny gaudy fiberglass work.

Kyle MacMillan's article in the Post last Sunday, seemed to have been a reaction to the public outcry, as it was in high praise of the long awaited piece.

Visual Summary: Big blue horse

Wow Factor: those demon eyes are funny

I agree with many people, as the size of the horse, gets lost in the vast open space. It would be fabulous at sunset or in a white snowy haze. The Broncos definitely come to mind, and the Big blue bear down at the convention center. I don't agree with MacMillan, that Mustang, has brought sophistication to Denver. A lone fiberglass sculpture can't class up this western town.

Jiminez's death, while working on the sculpture, to me is the most interesting part of the long history of Mustang. For Art Historiains, Mustang became a monument for Jimenez life, but most Denverites will still see it as a big ugly blue horse with demon eyes.

"Love" @ Showings

There is one painting to see at Showings Fine Art on Santa Fe. It's not the most technically well done painting, but it's one worth spending time in front of. Dan & Adam Conard's work is up until March 29th. When you first walk in to Showings, the painting is on the left, on an easel.

It's titled, "Love", by Adam of the Conards, and depicts a Rhino and an orange flower. It's a steal at $900. The background, composition, and flowers are somewhat similar to the painting, shown here, "Envy", by Adam Conard.

It's a beautiful painting, for it's quietness, and for its simplicity in the relationship between the African beast and the flower. Both C & I agreed this was something we would want in our home, and it's rare that C & I will come to the same conclusion about art. (When we first moved to Denver, my art was hung on the walls in the first week. C's is still sitting on the floor.)

It saddens me to say that the rest of the paintings in the room were somewhat of a let down after turning away from, "Love".

After viewing Adam Conard's website, I realized his paintings view much better in photos. The details in real life aren't polished. Despite all this, it's still worthy of having a look.

Tao of Water Rant

Are you kidding me? If you didn't recognize the kool kat bar scene by SHAG, when you first walked in, you obviously haven't been to any gift shop in the last 5 years.

His prints, cards, notebooks are everywhere.

The show is a real hodge-podge of themes, but all quality. The "Untitled" Women's portrait by Kris Lewis is a crowd pleaser, and hung close to the door as a street traffic draw.

The above left image, "From this distance: Containted Gift" by Gregory Euclide, does no justice to the actual work. It's a beautiful large piece, reminiscent of Chinese ink drawings, collaged with leaves and paper, I'm not giving in apt description, just know you should see it in person.

The above right, "Electralize" by Amy Casey is a great little drawing, that I would love to have in my home. Great lines, and nice use of empty space.

This was the last show I saw on First Friday, and it was a nice finish to the exhausting evening. I'm looking forward to future exhibits at Limited Addiction.

Dizzying Drawings at VERTIGO

Excellent drawings and bobbleheads describe "L.A. Although there are a lot of galleries, I could do without, I found some great ones to hold my interest in the search for quality Contemporary Art in Denver.

Vertigo was the first gallery we stumbled upon after negotiating Friday night traffic. L.A. stories, was not only humorous, but well executed.

Visual Summary: Black & White drawings with sparse color, lots of open space on page, celebrity head shots. Embossed urban text.

Wow Factor: How funny are little Beckam & Posh heads? Who couldn't love that pink elephant?

Not being familiar with either artist, I was pleased that the work seemed homogeneous, and not separate as "who did what"? If I read (o.k. looked at) People magazine, I could have identified more celebrities. I recommend spending some considerable time in the gallery, go with a friend, and make up your own stories about each piece. A great kick off for a trashy novel, or at least a story on Entertainment Tonight.

1st Friday

I thought I'd check this out tonight on my way home, as it's from 4-9pm as one of the 1st Friday venues. I'm nervous about going down to the Santa Fe district, as I was only there once, and wan't that impressed, I must admit.

Just a warning, if you're not going to read the small print above on the press: it's a photo show celebrating Coloradan photographer Myron Wood, not celebrating Georgia O'Keefe. Deceptive, as it is Women's History Month, and I thought they might be pushing both a female artist and photographer, but I'm wrong on both accounts. The space at Byers-Evans for artwork is small, more like one little reception room, but they should have some nice photos none the less.

See you there.

Still Schmill

So there's a lot of talk in Denver, about the Clyfford Still Museum opening in 2010. For me it's too early to get excited about, and another case of a building waaaay more interesting than the contents.
I'm just not a big Still fan, and I hesitate to say that Denver got greedy and too excited about an expanding arts district/scene, and took on the huge project that is the C.S. Museum. I'm also skeptical when it comes to museums honoring one artist. It's different, if an artists' former home/studio is turned into a museum: Wyeth, Hopper, Pollack, to name a few. But Still doesn't seem to fit this Western city, only that it has the money, or will raise the money for such a museum.

Regardless, they are hoping to get the DAM traffic, which I can't blame them. The design is nice and not too showy, next to the Liebskind's wonderkind that is the new DAM edition.

From initial renderings, the building thankfully doesn't look over designed. Having exposed Conservation Labs and Collection rooms is nothing new, but a nice education focus for the public.

I'll wait to reserve judgement, and apparantly I'll have to wait awhile. Just having seen a few pieces of his throughout collections in the country, I think it will be hard for the museum to carry itself.

Washington Nostalgia

I really missed Washington, DC this week, so I wanted to mention my favorite gallery there: Irvine Contemporary Art on 14th St. True fans remember when it was above the sex shop in Dupont Circle. The new space on 14th is much more modern: white walls and cement floor, but I miss the crown molding and wooden floors in the previous space. Martin Irvine and assistants pick some really great artists, and have recently focused on bringing more international artists in, such as hot commodities like Chinese artists. But I prefer the drawings they exhibit, often because they are more affordable than the paintings. I love Christine Kesler's work, (upper image), hers was the first piece of art I ever bought that wasn't from a guy painting at a popular tourist site. The lower painting is by Sean Foley.

Pangs of nostalgia hit me yesterday when I read the Whitney Biennial opens today. What was once an easy bus trip to NYC ( $35 dolla -Chinatown bus rocks!) is now an act of good luck and timing for discount flights on Frontier. I have til June 1st to figure out how to get there.

I shouldn't dwell too much in sorrow, as this week is "First Friday", and there are plenty of galleries I haven't seen yet. Just missing my old stomping ground. Forgive the memory lane journey......

GET OUT THERE!

Get out there people!! Well it's the only venue for contemporary textile art in town. Textile art got a bad rap in the 60's & 70's because of an abundance of macrame, translating down to walnut owls, with Cheerio eyes. Did you have one of these in your home too? On burlap no less.

Deborah Kruger's show, "Plumage: New work in Fiber & Encaustic" is up until March 15th.

Visual Summary: pointy painted colorful fabrics.

Wow Factor: The viewing room has some incredible pieces, by other artists.

It's not that I didn't like Kruger's work. There were some really interesting dramatic pieces. It pains me to see textile art in frames, behind plexi. I understand they might be easier to sell, but you miss the option to touch them. Would you rather reach out and touch a fuzzy wool weaving, or an oil painting?

The above picture, pretty well represents the large amount of work in the show. The gallery is quite spacious so you can spend some considerable time at Translations. Alongside Kruger's work, are some wonderful wood furniture tables, with fabric incorporated into the table surface. This is a must see. The pieces are an original mix of strip weavings and fine art furniture.

While you're at Translations, please don't miss the Viewing Room, on the right side as you enter the gallery. There are some very innovative artists work on display: crocheted ceramics, contemporary weavings, colorful modern quilts. If I had unlimited money, my walls and furniture would be covered with this stuff. Ruth Borgenicht's ceramics, Bob Adams' pieced fabrics, Karen Kanenetzky's "Roots of Rythm", just to name a few.

The first show I saw here, led me to believe I will alway find high quality work at Translations. Please check it out for yourself.

NEXT!

Next! Need I say more? Next gallery is in the space that Pirate Gallery once occupied, before they divided their space in almost half. This is the last of the 4 galleries in the LoHi area. I entered this gallery through the back of Pirate, and was thoroughly thoroughly disappointed.

Visual Summary: Shiny acrylics on canvas.....bleh.

Wow Factor: One painting by a non-headlining artist: Peppermint -wow!

Let me go with the good news first. There is a small painting on wood by Sara-Lou Klein, "Enjoy Every Moment". And I am kicking myself for not buying it for the low price of $65. In fact I shouldn't mention it as I still want to purchase it, but it was the only thing of note at NEXT.

It is a painting on wood, exposed so you can see the grain. A bear, a duck, and a peppermint. It sounds like a joke, but I assure you it's not. Prismacolor (colored pencil) on wood. Oh it's delightful and made me happy.

Now for the bad news: Two female artists share the space at Next: Theresa Lugo is headlining with "Iridescene", and Phyllis Rider's show: "Shadows and Light Reflections" are monotypes near the back. The show is only up until March 2nd. I can't even comment on Rider's work because I don't remember it well. Lugo's work-eh..... They can be described as colorful non-objective (meaning lots of different shapes with scrolly lines) acrylics on canvas with oooh Iridescent paint. I kid you not, Meininger sells Acrylic paint in tubes that are called: Iridescent Blue, Iridescent White. It was just a turn off, if the only thing of interest in the painting is that it uses shiny sparkly paint, then it really is unsuccessful. If I hadn't known better, I'd have thought they were done by a high school girl that decorates her cell phone with fake gems and tassels and sparkles. At least they weren't Barbie pink. I hate to be harsh, but I shouldn't apologize, because the paintings are out there for comment.

Skip NEXT, walk right on by, especially so I can go buy that Peppermint painting.

A little off the EDGE

The EDGE gallery, located next to Zip37, needs a glass paneled door, to invite people in, as there are no windows in this white cube, just a metal stand outside, reading: OPEN. EDGE is another one of the four co-op galleries in the LoHi area. Rian Kerrane's show, "Periodic Table of Elements", just closed this past weekend. While a clever concept, the final product was lacking in high craftsmanship.

Visual Summary: Gallery of random work, found objects in high volume. Some strong sculpture.

Wow Factor: A tall sculpture on wheels near the back. Nice.

Kerrane's 104 little square canvases of collages of found objects, although clever, just weren't executed that well. And to deal with an ordered subject like the periodic table, it would have been much better, if every piece was very clean and precise. I really liked the crocheted yellow covered shelf with a bronze colored teacup & saucer, but something was missing.

Matt Brown & Tom Robertson had some pieces in the back of the gallery, and my apologies as I don't know who did the one telephone pole like balancing act. Regardless there were some interesting and amusing sculptures.

The show is over now, and was worth seeing as you are in the area for the Pirate Gallery. I must say I was a little disappointed.

Zip37

Zip37 Gallery is one of the 4 co-ops in the LoHi area. Katherine McGuinness' show, "Capture the Image, New Figurative Works" is up until March 9th.

It's hard for me to recommend this show. But since you'll be at the Pirate Gallery, then you need to do the other galleries in the area service. What I recommend is grabbing a friend, caffeine beverage of choice, and your favorite pastry, and head over to this area one Saturday afternoon. Wander through the four galleries criticising and appreciating to your hearts content. You might even meet the artist, if your lucky, doing their gallery sitting. Don't miss the opportunity to question them about their work. You are much more likely to appreciate the made object when you meet the maker.

Visual Summary: Abstract work to the left, Picasso like figures to the Right. Simple black lines.

Wow Factor: Nice abstracts in showcasing red frames.

I wasn't a big fan of the dramatic story of the figurative work spread around the gallery. I think because the prints reminded me too much of the above pictured Picasso work, "The Lovers".

The abstract work I was more impressed with though. They were images of small brightly colored squares, in very nice red frames, that brought out the reds in the prints. Having talked to McGuinness, as she was there the Saturday I visited, she mentioned that people had asked when she was going to do more figurative work, thus the show. She seemed to prefer her abstract work, but that's only a guess. There's also a great print in the corner with a border of food and beverage labels. Hard not to be intrigued when you see Dos Eqquis labels paired with Mandarin Oranges.

It's worth walking in, and if you're not a big McGuinness fan, there's other artists' work in the back.

Ahoy, Maties! (aka: Pirate Contemporary Art Oasis) So yesterday, I left my downtown comfort zone, and headed up to LoHi (Lower Highlands) to see the quad of co-op galleries on the corner of 37th & Navajo. Pirate was by far, the best and most encouraging for this contemporary art seeker. I'll review the other 3 galleries later this week.

You've got to go see this show by Nicholas Silici, that's up til, well sorry folks: today, February 24th.

Disclaimer: Please ignore the creepy installation in the back of the gallery by Cal Duran. If you're tempted: broken mirrors, copper wire, poor portraits, and dirt on floor should hopefully dissuade you. If you're still curious, it will help you appreciate the calming nature of Silici's front room.

Visual Summary: shiny reflective simple landscapes in a spare white room.

Wow Factor: they are gorgeous and shiny and beautiful and stunning in the bare room.

My apologies to Silici, as he has stated, his canvases aren't landscapes, but shapes related to simple mathematical ratios. Please, when you use a landscape format, and muted blues & greens, the viewer sees "landscape". This is the kind of show, that many skeptics of abstract art will say, "I could do that". Well you couldn't, because the painted surface is perfect in it's many layers and simplicity. The craftsmanship is very high, which in good abstract or non-objective art has to be.

Highly reflective surfaces are very popular these days. It's not uncommon to see a lot of contemporary art with a thick layer of glossy resin, or epoxy poured over the top of a drawing or painting. Well these are done well folks. Before I rattle on anymore, about how much I liked this show, and wish I had $2000 to buy one, I'll end this with: see this show and look for more of Nicholas Silici's work in the Denver area.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://denverartseen.blogspot.com/2008/02/ahoy-maties-pirate-is-where-its-at.html' title='Ahoy, Maties! Sure I can imagine each of them behind a white leather sofa in a NYC loft, but it stops there. I tried to imagine that Dirk was inspired by the red and golds of New Mexico sunsets, but that didn't really help me appreciate them anymore.

Apparently he used asphalt as an under layer, and it acts as a resist. Well the asphalt would have been more interesting if it was visible in the final product, and it's not. Did you ever take a white piece of paper, put blobs of fingerpaint in the middle, then fold the paper in half, and open it to reveal colorful Rorschach tests? Well that came to mind, but on a larger scale.

You can skip this show, or if you're in the area stop by, head to the back, and hope one of those artists have an upcoming show. Or if you need a big non-objective, non-controversial painting to match your white leather sofa, or your corporate office, then by all means: enjoy to your heart's content.

FASHION!

While waiting to meet a friend for the movies, I stopped in at the Art Institute of Colorado on Broadway, right near the Golden Triangle. (I couldn't find any direct link to the gallery on their website, but it will give you the address.) The gallery is named: John Jellico Gallery, but AI gallery is much easier to remember. The gallery space is small, but perfect for the kind of exhibit they have on display: "Fashion Illustration: A retrospective of Fashion in the 1970's & 1980's by Jim Howard." I doubt Jim Howard has ever been mentioned in the same breath with Armani, Klein, Lauren, Mc Queen, etc. He's a retired Denver resident, but apparantly his career was once hopping in NYC, desiging for the big retail stores.

Visual summary: many many large Black & White illustrations of women in big baggy clothes. Fashion Plates made with the black crayon, come to life!

Wow factor: I was surprised at how big the illustrations were. I expected them to be scribbled on notebook pages. They made me want to dip croissants in warm coffees at a little Parisian cafe.

If you're walking along Broadway, downtown, it's definitely worth stopping in to look at the show. The setting is perfect for the intended audience: aspiring fashion designers studying fashion history. Students born in the 90's need to learn 80's fashion doesn't always mean neon or whatever H&M has brought back into circulation. While the exhibit isn't as entertaining as an episode of Project Runway, it's interesting to see the broad stokes that marry all fashion illustrations.

DAM I like this museum

"Free First Saturday" is approaching at the Denver Art Museum. If you don't mind crowds, this is the day to go. I recommend going early or late, but not in the middle of the day. If you want to cash in on the cashless day, then head to the older galleries, like the Asian Art, the Quilt area, and Decorative Fine Arts, as they are not as crowded as the new Liebskind wing.

If you hit one museum/gallery in all of Denver, this is the place to go. It has a great span of everything, and a wonderful place to start an art history lesson.

DAM is also good at public programs. Friday Feb.29 is an upcoming urbanite hipsters meat market. Honestly, I haven't been, but when the advertisement reads "cash bar", it means singles late night at the museum.

For those of you who have been hibernating this winter, I'll mention "Inspiring Impressionism" opens February 23rd. From the promotions, it looks like a good show, (review to come). Impressionism is always a crowd pleaser because of the pastel colors, Mary Cassatt paintings of little girls on mother's laps, and picturesque landscapes. The occasional Renoir nude is the only thing likely to stir up controversy. The show seems set up for a teaching exhibit: here's the fameous Manet, here's a French painting a 100 years before Manet, that inspired him.

Regardless of when you go, you'll always find something you like at the DAM, even if it's only in the gift shop.

RULE Gallery on Broadway

This is one of my favorite galleries, and the first one I ever went to in Denver (perhaps it's a favorite for sentimental reasons). The first show I ever saw there was Yoshitomo Saito's "108 Blue Cranes". I had persuaded C to drive me there as I was unfamiliar with Denver, and the black and white photo in the Westword's review had intrigued me. We found the quiet little space on Broadway, and were pleasantly surprised we had the gallery all to ourselves, which was perfect for such a show.

Visual Summary: A white room with a long row of green/blue squares on the wall.

Wow factor: These paintings are on canvas, but wait! Oh my - they're all bronze!

It was a relaxing show, and with that I mean references to meditation, Buddhism, and all the over themes that other critics would comment on. I found myself more intrigued with the process of making them, then the actual patterns on the bronzes. The room worked well as a whole, but if you seperate out one bronze piece, can it stand alone? Worth seeing the show? Definitely.

Pard Morrison's exhibition "50 Ways To Fall In Love,"

Visual Summary: bright colored squares on the wall and on columns.

Wow factor: Well, they were bright and shiny, but I'm not a mockingbird.

The show was pleasing, but not a huge wow factor. You can't make columns without referencing Anne Truitt, regardless of what color you paint them. Mondrian's paintings comes to mind too. But the surfaces were nice, and anyone could find at least one to take home. And bright colors make people happy, which is a nice thing to see on a bleak winter day. However, it's a shame they couldn't of had this show during Valentine's Day.

C and I play this game when we go to shows, while during a show we have to find 2 answers to the following question? Which piece are you buying if money was unlimited? Which piece are you stealing? Not that we condone stealing art, it's just a fun question. And most people could have found one painting to take home. Did I find a way to fall in love? No, but it wasn't a bad show, and it was worth walking into, even if for a minute to get out of the cold. It did make me want to go shopping at IKEA.

Penny for Contemporary

A penny is not a bad price to pay for the Contemporary Art Museum. If you're not at the Denver Art Museum on First Saturday, then you should be down at the Contemporary. The building is much more impressive than the art in it this month. However as the staff assured me, there will be something new when I come back, so I am most hopeful!

Visual Summary: Big vacuous modern building with a great view of the city. And heaven for people that like their own reflection.

Wow factor: David Altmejd's installation. Automatic sliding steel warehouse door at entrance.

It's worth taking the stairs for an amazing installation by Canandian, David Altmejd. If you've ever wanted to wander through a scrapyard of frozen mirror-ball Transformers than this is the place. Fantastical and fun.

If you have more time, check out the view from the top of the building. You'll count about 12 construction cranes. You can smell the new paint on the condos for sale. The roof top is an interesting space if only for the anticipation of summer, with some greenery on the roof, and a more pleasant temperature than a cold Saturday morning in February. A nice place for a cafe too. And I picked up a free temporary Maori tattoo in the education center. If you have an out of town guest that is urban inclined, take them up here for this view.

Overall: yes, it's worth going to see the museum, it's only a penny, and you're bound to find one thing that interests you, even if it's only in the bookstore. Left over candy from Felix Gonzales Torres? Best hope the Bob Marley/ Nam Paik like video monitors are malfunctioning that day. I like Bob Marley, but not when you can't escape the sounds of one not so clever video installation in the basement.

Colorado History Museum

The history museum is free this month on Sundays and is worth checking out. On the first floor, the Italians exhibit is amusing, if only for the stero-typical pop-culture area, to see a poster of the Sopranos and the Godfather video in one case. It has things that you would expect to see, like a wine press. The exhibit is well-designed and laid out, but not a whole lot is memorable. Oyster plates? The pizelle maker in the gift shop was tempting to buy though... Overall the exhibit was pleasing on the eye to walk through, and as a new Denverite, I was surprised of the large Italian presense in the history of this town.

As you travel downstairs, you'll notice the basement is the heart of the museum. It's an obvious flow of old and new exhibits, and the mining and machine shop are as boring as it sounds. Unless you or your grandfather are a miner and machinist.

Ancient Voices: walk quickly through and check out some of the incredible pottery. Spend more time in Tribal Paths, as this is a beautiful history of Native American's in Colorado. Also see if you can find the children's cases in the basement, as there are some amazing old chidren's games piled on top of each other in some of the doll cases.
